Ratings Report:

  • It’s beginning to look a lot like reruns as we get closer to Christmas. The field was mostly in encore mode, with very few exceptions. NBC unsurprisingly took the night with THE VOICE finale grabbing a 1.7 and 9.84 million viewers, easily the highest of the night (and the only program to score over a 1.0, except for a rerun of TV’s last show, which grabbed a 1.2).
  • CW was the only other network with new programming, airing two holiday themed specials. GREATEST HOLIDAY COMMERCIALS COUNTDOWN grabbed a 0.3, while GREATEST HOLIDAY VIDEO COUNTDOWN put up a 0.2.

Of Note:

  • Monday night looked largely the same as last week, with a few usual suspects shuffling one or two places at the top. For a third week in a row, ESPN dominated the top three; the main broadcast of the New Orleans vs Carolina game scored a 4.0 in adults 18-49, a five-tenths improvement over last week’s game. MONDAY NIGHT KICKOFF and after-game SPORTSCENTER traded spots this week; SPORTSCENTER slid into number two, three-tenths up from last week to rest at 1.4, while MONDAY NIGHT KICKOFF actually dropped down a tenth this week, earning a 1.3.
  • Also crowded into the top of the field were WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW, which rose up to the four, five, and six spots, peaking at a 0.9 rating throughout the three-hour broadcast. LOVE AND HIP HOP stumbled a bit, losing a tenth and three spaces, landing at seventh overall for Monday cable.
  • Elsewhere, God bless Christmas and Food Network for partnering for yet another holiday season of gluttony and food porn. HOLIDAY BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP held on to its 0.5 status, while CHRISTMAS COOKIE CHALLENGE retained its 0.3 score.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • I spoke with the producers over at Pilgrim Media yesterday, who sent over a few formats for review. Of the three, SMALL BUSINESS CHAMPIONS intrigues me the most, previously a pilot at CBS bought by Les Moonves, but has been in limbo since his ousting. Notes on all three formats below, and attached you’ll find decks for both TRUST and LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT.
      • SMALL BUSINESS CHAMPIONS | CBS Studios produced, CBS commissioned

Log line: Tweenage Shark Tank, but instead of looking for investment or venture capital, these young entrpreneurs are dealing with the currency of social media posts. Guest judges include online influencers, celebrities, and business leaders.

  • According to Pilgrim, after the pilot was shot and Moonves exited, it has sat on the shelf due to internal politics. Currently there are no plans to bring it forward.
  • Robert Irvine (Restaurant Impossible) hosts
  • You can watch the pilot HERE
  • TRUST | Available format | Dating Competition

Log Line: Sixteen single live together in a house to compete in the ultimate quest for love and money. With one million dollars (USD) up for grabs, the singles are put through a series of competitions both as individuals and couples, where the ultimate challenge is being sent to the “Trust Chamber” where they play to either stick around for the partner, or double cross them to steal their bank.

  • LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT – S2 | Lifetime | S1 aired on FYI

Log Line: Nothing tests a budding relationship like travel, and the new series Love at First Flight takes it a step further, matching new couples to embark on a romantic (and stressful) journey across North America — with the chance to get married at the airport immediately after their final flight lands. In season two, the couples will meet for the first time in Chicago, before criss-crossing the country towards Los Angeles, as their compatibility is tested not only by the unpredictable pressures of travel, but also by a series of uniquely crafted travel-based challenges.

  • Season one of the show was so-so for Pilgrim and FYI, with pacing being the main issue. For season 2, they have decided to focus on three couples instead of four, with a much quicker pace overall in the edits.
  • Other changes for season 2:
    • Couples will live together, as well as travel together
    • The matchmakers will have a larger role and be seen in every episode
    • A lump sum of $10,000 USD will be giving to each couple at the beginning of the trip, which they must manage together over the 30 day travel odyssey
    • More soapy and a story style much closer to THE BACHELOR

  • Bravo has put a reboot of UK drama series QUEER AS FOLK into development, with original creator Russell T. Davies coming back to oversee the new project, written and directed by Stephen Dunn. The updated version will feature new characters in a new setting, and is described as a modern take on the original British series, centering on a group of club-going friends who find support in the gay community following a tragedy. Universal Cable Productions is the studio; Digital Rights Group is producing with Quantity Entertainment and Red Productions.
