Ratings Report:

  • With an overrun of football, Fox gave NBC a run for its money Sunday night, but NBC predictably took the night overall with its Sunday night game. Kicking off the evening, FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA actually shrank week-to-week, dropping two tenths to 1.7 this week. However, both the PREGAME (4.4) and live game between the LA Rams and Chicago Bears were up considerably from last week, rising four and five tenths, respectively.
  • Moving back to Fox, it should be noted that while all shows are up currently, there will be some downward adjustments later in the day after calculating for the football overrun. So, as it stands this morning, THE SIMPSONS is currently up over a point, earning a 2.8, BOB’S BURGERS (1.8) is up six tenths, FAMILY GUY (1.5) rose by three tenths, and freshman comedy REL bounced up by two tenths to 0.8.
  • ABC had a mostly steady night, despite a two-tenths dip for AMERICA’S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS (0.6). The finale of DANCING WITH THE STARS: JUNIOR put up a steady 0.6, and a new episode of SHARK TANK maintained a 0.7 rating.
  • CBS faltered a bit without football’s helping hand. Both 60 MINUTES (0.9/-.4) and GOD FRIENDED ME (0.8/-.2) were down week-to-week, while NCIS LA (0.9) and MADAM SECRETARY (0.6) bumped along steadily, putting up the same ratings as their last episodes two weeks ago.
  • On The CW, a new episode of THE FLASH pulled a 0.6, up two tenths from SUPERGIRL, which normally airs in the same slot, but down a tenth from its last episode earlier in the week. CHARMED turned in another steady 0.3.

Of Note:

  • JERSEY SHORE FAMILY VACATION took the top spot over football on Thursday night, though both put up identical ratings to last week. Shore topped out at 0.7, while THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL’s game between Jacksonville and Tennessee occupied the number two and three spots on the list, also at 0.7s.
  • NBA live coverage also landed near the top; a game between the Rockets and Jazz aired on TNT to the tune of a 0.4, while MTV’s FLORIBAMA SHORE rounded out the top five, maintaining a steady 0.4.
  • IMPRATICAL JOKERS on TruTV aired the final two episodes of its season; both scored 0.3s in adults 18-49, while multiple airings of A&E’s LIVE PD: PD CAM and LIVE PD: POLICE PATROL dotted the list with 0.4s and 0.3s.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • A&E is developing nearly a dozen new unscripted formats primarily with British producers, with an eye to stacking content in the latter half of 2019 and into 2020. Of the shows it’s working on, those receiving the most love is VOICES FROM THE GRAVE, a format that follows terminally ill people and creates holograms of them before they die so that they can give their families a message when they pass. I’m intrigued by the fact that Naked Entertainment (who is producing) and A&E worked in conjunction with bereavement specialists and psychologists to create a multi-faceted, deeply layered look at death.
    • A&E is also looking for development in the following arenas:
      • Competition/game show along the lines of FORGED IN FIRE on History Channel
      • Medical projects – open on world/format/characters
      • Paranormal – ghost hunting and mediums, NO aliens/UFO
      • Found money formats – in the vein of STORAGE WARS
    • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
      • COURT TV is making a comeback in 2019, courtesy of Katz Networks (a division of W. Scripps Co). The once-iconic channel, known for airing live gavel-to-gavel coverage of media frenzied trials such as the OJ Simpson, Menedez Brothers, and Casey Anthony cases, will relaunch as an ad-supported network available through cable and satellite bundles as well as over-the-air and streaming over-the-top options. The two biggest pieces of the deal that stick out to me are:
        • The IP acquisition – A key component of this deal was Katz acquiring all IP from the previous iteration of the channel, which includes original marks, website, and a 100,000+ hour library of content. To quote the company, it is “a wealth of content that will allow Court TV to enhance new courtroom coverage, revisit past trials and create original programming and specials.”
        • The timing – While I’m sure this negotiation has been in the works for awhile, relaunching a live-trial channel in 2019 just as the Mueller investigation is beginning to show what cards it has on all the President’s men smacks of shrewd opportunism (where else would you mount a case against a washed-up reality star cum despot but on live court tv?). However, I’m skeptical of how much of a splash the channel can make in an overcrowded news-programming market, especially if it’s relying on old trials to spin into new content.
      • TRAILERS:
        • NBC has released the first of three trailers promoting the sixth season of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE (the first on NBC after five seasons on Fox). I’ve always been a fan of the off-the-wall, absurd silliness of this show and the trailer does not disappoint. Check it out HERE
        • For the first time, Dr. Who is done saving Christmas and on hand to ensure the Earth gets to live past the first day of 2019. The show’s first New Year’s Special, appropriately titled Resolution, released a first trailer today, which looks like it’ll incorporate all the usual Doctor Christmas tropes, but y’know, for New Year’s.
