Ratings Report:

  • It was a steady to down night across the primetime field last night, with the sole exception being The CW’s FLASH, which rose a tenth from 0.6 to 0.7 this week (BLACK LIGHTNING maintained its usual 0.3).
  • Circling back to NBC, the network once again won Tuesday night, but was noticeably down in overall average without THIS IS US or NEW AMSTERDAM on the schedule. THE VOICE slipped a tenth, and was down to a 1.4, while a SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE CHRISTMAS special scored a 1.0 and 4.1 million viewers (down two tenths from the 2017 special).
  • CBS and Fox had steady nights: on CBS, NCIS (1.2), FBI (1.0), and NCIS: NEW ORLEANS (0.8) all returned even after a week off. For Fox, THE GIFTED and LETHAL WEAPON scored identical 0.7s, same as last week.
  • ABC lost the most ground as its comedy block sank week-to-week. All shows, THE CONNERS (1.3), THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (0.8), BLACK-ISH (0.8), SPLITTING UP TOGETHER (0.6), and THE ROOKIE (0.7) lost a tenth.

OTHER NEWS:

  • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
    • Quibi, the new subscription service venture by Jeffrey Katzenberg, has made one of its first series pickups, grabbing BENEDICT MEN, a new docuseries executive produced by Stephen Curry’s Unanimous Media and produced by Whistle. The verité series will take an inside look at one of the most unique high school basketball teams in America at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey. As one of the top athletic high schools with a storied basketball program and the highest graduation rate in New Jersey, the series will follow the brotherhood of young men who seek to balance life in complicated surroundings and according to the school’s founding core belief, “What hurts my brother, hurts me.”
    • MTV Studios continues to revive its own 90s IP, this time putting a reimagined version of cult stop-motion satire series CELEBRITY DEATHMATCH. The new iteration of the series, starring Ice Cube as host, will be shopped as a weekly series to premium and streaming networks in 2019. The show is the first step in a plan for reinventing the franchise across consumer products, gaming, theatrical and other markets. If you haven’t seen it, check out one of the more memorable battles between KID ROCK and EMINEM.
    • USA has released its first trailer for the reboot of TEMPTATION ISLAND. It looks exactly the same as the original series, and as trashy as ever (although the Maui setting is gorgeous). Personally, this isn’t my cup of tea at all, but here’s the TRAILER.
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • A few interesting tidbits from WME agent Rick Rosen’s Paley Dialogues event last night:
      • Dick Wolf is in the midst of “reviving one of his shows from years ago” adding that it “doesn’t necessarily have to have the same cast” for it to be successful. Multiple networks are currently bidding, and my money is on NEW YORK UNDERCOVER being the franchise, which ran for four seasons in the mid-90s on Fox.
      • WME is currently packaging a show with Colin Kaepernick, but has not yet been taken to market
      • Expect to see a series order for a drama starring Richard Gere at Apple before the end of the year
