Ratings Report:

  • Good news, bad news for ABC last night. First, the good news: the 2018 COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS (CMA) easily topped ratings and viewers on broadcast, scoring a 2.1 and 10.06 million viewers overall. However, year-to-year, the awards are way down – a full point and four million eyeballs down, to be exact.
  • Against the awards shows, other broadcasters’ programming fared pretty well. Fox, the usual winner for Wednesday primetime saw STAR maintain its 1.1 rating, while EMPIRE fell a tenth to 1.4.
  • CBS was down across the board; SURVIVOR was down two tenths to 1.4 this week, while SEAL TEAM (0.8) and CRIMINAL MINDS (0.7) both slipped a tenth.
  • NBC’s CHICAGO franchise night was fairly steady – both MED (1.2) and FIRE (1.3) were steady with last week, while PD took a one tenth hit to score a 1.0 last night.
  • The CW’s RIVERDALE (0.4) and ALL AMERICAN(0.3) both matched their previous episodes.

Of Note:

  • With no live sports programming countering it, USA’s WWE SMACKDOWN rose to the top of the Tuesday cable ratings this week with a 0.8 rating in adults 18-49, up a tenth from last week. The season 6 premiere of History’s THE CURSE OF OAK ISLAND followed closely behind with a 0.7, even with its season 5 finale back in March. BELOW DECK on Bravo rounded out the top three with a 0.5.
  • Elsewhere on a quiet night in cable, MTV’s THE CHALLENGE: FINAL RECKONING bounced back a tenth to 0.5 this week, while TBS comedy THE GUEST BOOK maintained a 0.3.
  • Also hitting the list was an A&E special with Leah Remini – branching out from its usual tales about Scientology, the special explored Jehovah’s Witnesses, earned a 0.3 and just under a million viewers.
  • WELCOME TO MURDERTOWN, a show that intrigues me although I’m still so-so on the production value scored a 0.2 in its premiere and 1.06 million viewers.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • I spoke with the development team over at Ugly Brother Studios the other day, who sent over this proof of concept reel for THIS IS FAMILY. Link goes to the test episode (21:50 TRT), project notes below:
      • Format is very similar to CROSSING OVER WITH JOHN EDWARDS where a live audience watches when people are called down from the audience to investigate their DNA findings with a professional genealogist
      • Features three people searching for clues and connections to relatives through genealogy. Pilot stories:
        • Story 1: Woman obsessed with finding her father, ends up having a half brother in the audience
        • Story 2: Adopted man who learns about his birth father
        • Story 3: Woman searching for any family – turns out the guy from Story #2 is her half-brother (they have the same birth mother)
      • Lifetime commissioned the pilot, with Ancestry.com partnering to provide DNA kits and services. Lifetime passed and rights have reverted to Ugly Bros.
      • My thoughts: As a half-hour, this show does not work, glossing over major pieces of information and backstory in minutes to get to the biggest story beats/reveals as quickly as possible. The result is a heavily edited 22 minutes that comes across as shallow and not very genuine. To be frank, I was super turned off by the overwhelming reactions of the participants – whether it was genuine emotion or not, it reads as inauthentic in the cut, to me. Concept wise, I always find family history and genealogy fascinating, but don’t think this is quite the format for it (expanding to 60 minutes would most likely mitigate some of those issues – provided that there is enough intriguing information to fill 3-4 segments over the hour).
