Ratings Report:

  • With the World Series wrapped up, broadcasters were largely back to normal Tuesday night, with NBC having the steadiest week. THE VOICE (1.6), THIS IS US (2.1), and NEW AMSTERDAM (1.3) are all currently sitting even with their prelim numbers last week.
  • CBS rebounded slightly this week, both NCIS (1.3) and NCIS: NEW ORLEANS (0.9) are back up a tenth (probably people switching back to their regular viewing schedule after watching the Series). Dick Wolf’s FBI was steady with yet another 1.0.
  • ABC enjoyed the largest gains of the night (though they’re still lagging pretty far behind in total live audience). THE CONNERS ticked up a tenth to 1.8 this week, while THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (1.3), BLACK-ISH (1.1), and SPLITTING UP TOGETHER (0.9) all gained two tenths. THE ROOKIE scored a steady 0.8 to round out the evening.
  • On Fox, THE GIFTED returned with a steady 0.6, while LETHAL WEAPON dropped to a series-low 0.6 (and after all the very public drama surrounding Damon Wayans comments about working on the show, no wonder). Over on the CW, both THE FLASH and BLACK LIGHTNING earned a pair of 0.6s, down a tenth from last week.

Of Note:

  • MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL stayed at the top of a mostly steady night in the cable ratings this week. ESPN’s broadcast of the Patriots vs. Bills game scored a 3.5 rating in adults 18-49, even with last week’s MNF broadcast, and towering more than two points higher than any of the night’s other shows. The network’s pre-game MONDAY NIGHT KICKOFF special and a late-night edition of SPORTSCENTER rounded out the top 3 with a pair of 1.3s.
  • On USA, WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW posted the same peak 1.0 rating as last Monday, while VH1’s LOVE & HIP HOP HOLLYWOOD maintained a 0.9 for the second week in a row.
  • A personal comment on cable news, as I roll my eyes and count five programs on Fox News making the top 25 list. The news cycle can hardly keep up with the amount of crazy being spouted every day, and the Americans just suffered their worst bomb scare since 9/11 and deadliest hate crime in their history, but in the midst of it, Fox News reports, “We won in ratings in October! HOORAY!” It’s simply gobsmacking, misses the point entirely, and is dangerous to equate winning in ratings with being right. And yet, this is still the metric Trump uses to measure his “success” and others’ “failure.” It is sheer lunacy watching the US run like a TV show.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • I spoke with the development team over at Fox yesterday and was able to get a little more information on THE MASKED SINGER. Quick notes below:
      • They shot the entire season very quickly (8-9 days), and enthusiasm/investment in the project has been sky-high from the start. The exec I spoke to mentioned that everyone involved with the show really got into the gameplay and audiences remained highly engaged throughout the tapings.
      • Per the exec I talked to, the production was smooth, and all the judges had great chemistry. She did mention that she would still tweak some of the formatting and wanted to do more hours.
      • Celebs are recognizable/household, but not necessarily the “latest/hottest”
      • The marketing campaign for the premiere on 2 January is already huge and will continue to be so – there were promos (see HERE) during the World Series and will continue around NFL games.
      • I’ll be sending sneak peeks during the week of 5 November
    • As far as other game shows for Fox, MENTAL SAMURAI just finished shooting and hasn’t been through an initial review yet, and the first cut of SPIN THE WHEEL was turned in this week.
  • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
    • WELCOME TO MURDERTOWN | Britespark Films | Investigation Discovery | 6×60

Log line: Follows the baffling murder mysteries where it’s not just one person who’s hiding something – it’s everybody. The docu-series will focus on cold cases that have come up against a wall of silence from communities that will not divulge information, then decades later, a witness helps solve the case.

  • Begins airing 13 November in the US
  • Here’s an interesting twist on campaigning: Michelle Obama is hosting THE TELETHON FOR AMERICA, aimed not at raising money, but on collecting pledges to vote. Airing 5 and 6 November (the day before and day of the midterm elections), the telethon will be streamed on YouTube, Facebook Live, and Comedy Central. Obviously, the broadcast is heavily geared towards getting out the younger vote, particularly those 18-35. The celebrities participating are a broad cross section of film, television, music and online stars including Charlize Theron, Whitney Cummings, Tom Arnold (for some reason), Adam Devine, and others. Whether this actually succeeds in getting anyone out to vote, however…I remain skeptical.
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • Pilgrim Media and Digital Circus have partnered to produce a range of programming across multiple platforms all centering around the Isle of Man TT. The deal, brokered by Isle of Media on behalf of the Isle of Man government, is all encompassing, granting Pilgrim Media & Digital Circus rights to develop race-driven content for TV, film, online streaming and gaming platforms. The 37.73 mile motorsports race marks its 100th run in 2019, and is considered one of the deadliest in the world (150 have died since the race began in 1997).
