Ratings Report:

  • BIG BROTHER on CBS once again took the top spot on summer Sundays, matching the 1.6 rating it adjusted up to in the finals last week. The long running reality program also scored its biggest audience of the season to date, bringing in 5.78 million viewers.
  • Over on NBC, Jennifer Lopez led SHADES OF BLUE closed out its series with a 0.6, steady with last week and even with its third season penultimate and premiere episodes. It rounded out a quiet night on the network, with an earlier broadcast of the US Gymnastics Championship scoring a 0.6, as well.
  • ABC’s CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD (0.8) took the week off and was predictably down two-tenths, while THE $100,000 PYRAMID maintained a 0.8 and TO TELL THE TRUTH fell to a season-low 0.6 with 3.47 million viewers.

Of Note:

  • ESPN’s Thursday night NFL preseason coverage easily led the cable ratings this week. The network’s broadcast of the Washington Redskins vs New York Jets game scored a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49, almost double what any of the night’s other shows scored, with 2.56 million viewers.
  • A&E’s LIVE PD came in second for the night, holding steady with another 0.5, and Live PD’s newest spinoff NIGHTWATCH NATION, rounded out the top three, also earning a 0.5.
  • FX’s SNOWFALL continued its recent 0.4 streak as well, despite ticking down just slightly in total viewers from 975,000 to 923,000. The History Channel’s ALONE maintained a 0.3 yet again, as did Bravo’s SHAHS OF SUNSET (0.3). After ticking up last week, USA’s QUEEN OF THE SOUTH held onto a 0.4 for the second week in a row.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • TNT is dipping its toe in late-night waters, ordering a pilot with Claws star Niecy Nash. Currently titled NAKED WITH NIECY NASH, the former Reno 911 star will provide her comedic take and dispense advice on issues involving love, sex, romance and relationships as she interacts with everyday people.
      • Sue Murphy (former EP of Chelsea Handler’s shows Chelsea Lately [E!] and Chelsea [Netflix]) will be executive producer/showrunner
      • Co-production between Studio T (Turner’s studio) and Telepictures (division of WB Unscripted & Alternative TV)
    • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
      • Let’s start with what’s not being ordered. Netflix continues to ramp up its kill-percentage on first season shows, this time with talk shows THE BREAK WITH MICHELLE WOLF and THE JOEL MCHALE SHOW both getting the boot. The network is still struggling to find a groove with its comedy talk programs, neither the “one episode a week” worked for either show, nor the “release at once” strategy for the additional six episodes ordered for The Joel McHale Show. Although Netflix famously does not release viewership data on any of their programs, nevertheless, the reason stated for canceling the freshman series was down to that age-old reason, “not enough viewership to secure renewal.” Of course, now I’m more curious than ever what their benchmarks are.
      • Unsurprisingly, Netflix gave a renewal nod to breakout dramedy hit GLOW for a third season.
      • HBO is having a little more luck in the late night arena – it has renewed critically acclaimed RANDOM ACTS OF FLYNESS for a second season just two weeks after the series premiere. The show, created, written and directed by Terence Nance, explores a series of cultural idioms like “patriarchy” and “white supremacy” in a mix of vérité documentary, musical performances, surrealist melodrama and humorous animation, weaving together themes such as ancestral trauma, history, death, the singularity, romance and more.
    • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
      • All hail our future robot overlords, Echo, Alexa, and…Frank? Amazon is currently developing a DVR device (code-named “Frank” in-house) that could bypass cable and satellite TV all together; instead connecting to the company’s own Fire TV box using the same tech as the Echo speakers. It may or may not have a streaming feature, and no release date is set.
