Ratings Report:

  • CBS’ BIG BROTHER maintained its place at the top of the Thursday night primetime ratings in the adults 18-49 demo this week. The CBS series posted a (likely NFL-inflated) 1.8 rating, up four-tenths from the 1.4 it had adjusted down to last Thursday.
  • ABC kicked off primetime with a 20/20 special devoted to the late Aretha Frankling, grabbing a 0.8 in 18-49s and 4.78 million viewers, before sliding into its usual line up of Thursday game shows. MATCH GAME was steady with its preliminary 0.8 rating last week, but may adjust down once again in the finals (last week it settled at 0.6). TAKE TWO is currently at 0.6, even with last week, but any downward adjustments will result in an overall dip for the show week-to-week.
  • On NBC, last night’s pair of TRIAL & ERROR episodes posted 0.9 and 0.7 ratings, but will also likely adjust down later today. FOX’s NASCAR coverage, meanwhile, grabbed a 0.4 and 1.37 million viewers.

Of Note:

  • VH1’s BLACK INK CREW: CHICAGO jumped to the top spot of the night in the Wednesday cable ratings this week, rising a tenth to a 0.6 rating in adults 18-49. TLC’s DR. PIMPLE POPPER followed closely behind, but was down a tenth from the 0.6 it had scored a week ago to a 0.5 this time around. Bravo’s THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF NEW YORK CITY also took a minor hit this week, falling from a 0.5 to a 0.4, but still good enough to round out the top three.
  • On the Paramount Network, YELLOWSTONE continued its 0.4 streak, while USA’s THE SINNER similarly maintained a 0.3.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • Renee Zellweger has signed on to her first major role on television, and is set to star in WHAT/IF, a social thriller anthology series for Netflix. The series is written by Mike Kelley (Swingtown, Revenge) and produced by Robert Zemeckis through his Compari production banner, under a deal with Each season of the new anthology will tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life.
    • Paramount Television has acquired the TV rights to develop the 2000 cult gangster film SEXY BEAST into a series. Anonymous Content is on board to develop alongside Paramount TV under their first look deal with the studio, and will shop the adaptation to streamers and cable in coming days.
      • Michael Caleo, whose credits (appropriately) include The Sopranos, will write the adaptation.
    • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
      • WATCHMEN | White Rabbit | WBTV | HBO | 12×60 | 2019

Log line: Set in an alternate history where “superheroes” are treated as outlaws, WATCHMEN embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel by Alan Moore while attempting to break new ground of its own.

  • Damon Lindelof acts as showrunner and executive producer.
  • TREADSTONE | Captivate, Imperative Entertainment | UCP | USA | TBDx60 | production begins 2019

Log line: Explores the origin story and present-day actions of a CIA black ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses behavior-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins. The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.

  • Originally announced as a pilot, but is now moving straight-to-series based on advanced talks with Amazon to bring in the streamer as the international distributor (it would certainly pair well with JACK RYAN, premiering at the end of the month).
  • Tim Kring (Heroes) writes and executive produces; other Eps include Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas (Imperative), and Justin Levy (UCP).
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has closed a first-of-its-kind partnership with T-Mobile for a fan event and show live from Central Park on 13 September.
      • Components of the partnership include a T-Mobile sweepstakes to send fans to the special Central Park show, surprise celebrity guests, and an event area completely swathed in the familiar T-mobile magenta branding.
      • Custom social content is being generated for the event and will be rolled out to T-Mobile customers on phones and in stores.
