Ratings Report:

  • NFL preseason kicked off Thursday night, easily taking the lead with a 1.8 in adults 18-49 and 6.5 million viewers watching the game between the Chicago Bears and Baltimore Ravens. However, the rating was off by four-tenths from the first 2017 preseason game that also aired on NBC.
  • CBS was the runner up last night; BIG BROTHER held up well against pre-season, only down a tenth from its previous airing (1.5 to 1.4).
  • Fox is certainly happy with how THE FOUR closed out its second season; the finale hit a season high 1.1 and audience high of 3.37 million, despite going head to head with football on NBC.
  • On ABC, both THE GONG SHOW (0.5) and TAKE TWO (0.4) were even with last week.

Of Note:

  • It was a very quiet Wednesday on cable, with TLC’s DR. PIMPLE POPPER leading the charge at a 0.6 in adults 18-49, followed closely by THE REAL HOUSEWIVE OF NEW YORK CITY on Bravo at a 0.5. VH1’s BLACK INK CREW: CHICAGO rounded out the top three but dropped a tenth week-to-week, earning a 0.5 this time around.
  • The season 2 premiere of THE SINNER scored a 0.3 with 1.15 million viewers on USA, down a tenth from the 0.4 that its first season premiere had grabbed last year.
  • After falling to a 0.3 the previous 2 weeks, the Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone,” meanwhile, ticked up one-tenth to a 0.4 this week.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • YouTube is developing its first slate of Spanish-language programming, which includes a range of titles specifically geared to launch on YouTube Premium.
      • Gael Garcia Bernal (Coco), Latin pop-star Maluma, and Mexican comedian Sofia Niño de Rivera have all been tapped to star in series, although details of all projects are being kept under wraps.
    • Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse than WBTV rebooting ALF, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way & Jessica Biel stepped in to say, “Hold my beer…let’s resurrect THE FACTS OF LIFE.” You read that right: Leo and Jessica’s companies are deep in negotiations to potentially bring back Blair, Natalie, Jo, and Tootie to a whole new generation of teenage girls. Unsurprisingly, they do not yet have a writer for the potential development and Sony Pictures TV declined to comment (I wouldn’t want to, either).
  • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
    • Following up on the news of Fox bringing THE MASKED SINGER to midseason, the network has released a trailer, which you can see HERE. There are few stranger things I’ve seen than a one-eyed monster soulfully singing “Stay With Me”, and yet…I’m so in.
    • Not to be outdone by other premium channels and streamers sinking big bucks into sprawling, epic limited event series, FX has greenlit a 10×60 series to recreate SHOGUN, based on James Clavell’s 1975 best-selling novel about feudal Japan. In short, Shōgun charts the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds and a mysterious female samurai: John Blackthorne, an English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan; Lord Toranaga, a powerful daimyo; and Lady Mariko, a woman who must prove her value and allegiance.
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • FX is expanding the scope and availability of its ad-free programming option FX+, opening the option up to all 90 million US subscribers (it was previously only carried as an add-on for cable providers Comcast and Cox). The service will still cost $5.99 USD per month, but helps the traditional programmer secure its place in the digital sphere. FX will also adopt a similar strategy as CBS All Access and Showtime, giving subscribers advance availability to some of their most anticipated shows, including Sons of Anarchy spinoff MAYANS MC.
