Ratings Report:

  • BIG BROTHER was once again the ratings winner for Wednesday, earning a steady 1.5 in adults 18-49 (the highest of the night). Although the audience was slightly smaller than last week, the show’s 5.57 million viewers was still enough to narrowly beat out WORLD OF DANCE on NBC.
  • Speaking of NBC, WORLD OF DANCE rose a tenth this week to 1.1; coupled with yet another 0.4 for VR drama REVERIE, it was enough to push NBC to an overall win on broadcast for the night.
  • Elsewhere, Fox’s MASTERCHEF dipped slightly, down a tenth to 0.7, while on CW, the second episode of BURDEN OF PROOF stayed steady with a 0.2 and THE ORIGINALS closed out its series even with its fifth season average, at 0.3.

Of Note:

  • Much like its brother series RAW, Tuesday’s WWE SMACKDOWN rose back up to the top of cable ratings, earning a 0.8 in adults 18-49 and even with last week. BELOW DECK MEDITERRANEAN on Bravo took the number two spot at 0.6, also even with last week, while MIS & MRS on USA rounded out the top three with a 0.5, down three tenths from its premiere episode last week (not surprising).
  • On TNT, ANIMAL KINGDOM continued its season-long 0.4 streak, while MTV’s THE CHALLENGE: FINAL RECKONING took a hit this week, falling one-tenth from a 0.5 to a 0.4.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • I always wondered what the final sign of the Apocalypse would be, and today I finally got an answer: ALF is being rebooted. Yes, you read that correctly. The late 80s, cat-eating, furry and arrogant alien from planet Melmac is being reworked by Warner Bros TV, who are apparently not joking about the possibility of bringing the Alien Life Form back.
  • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
    • Fox has ordered several game shows to series, including THE MASKED SINGER, the South Korean format we reported on at the end of 2017. If you’re interested in more information or possible tape, please contact me or Amanda (as@2026.tv ):
      • THE MASKED SINGER | PREMIERE: JAN, 2019

Format: Celebrities facE off against one another with one major twist: each singer is shrouded from head to toe in an elaborate costume, complete with full face mask to conceal his or her identity. The show’s judges and host play detective to figure out who is behind the costume.

  • Nick Cannon will host ,and Ken Jeong, Jenny McCarthy, Nicole Sherzinger, and Robin Thicke serve as the panel of “detectives.”
  • Endemol Shine NA produces; Craig Plestis (Minute to Win It) and Izzie Pick Ibarra (Dancing With The Stars) are executive producers.
  • According to an unscripted exec I talked to who was at the first taping, everything ran smoothly and felt fun and energetic in the moment. Cuts are still forthcoming, but the team is high on the project.
  • SPIN THE WHEEL | PREMIERE: sometime during 2018-19 season; no target set

Game play: Contestants spin a colossal, spinning 40-foot wheel that holds large sums of cash prizes in its rotation. Throughout the game, players will answer trivia questions – each correct answer adds more extreme amounts of cash in the wheel’s wedges in a strategic location of their choice, while each incorrect answer adds more dangerous wedges that could instantly bring their total back to zero. With massive prize money on the line, contestants must make tough decisions: whether to walk away, or risk it all to Spin the Wheel one last time.

  • Justin Timberlake executive produces with Andrew Glassman (developer of THE WALL/NBC); actor Dax Shepard will host
  • Contestants have a chance to win up to $20M USD per episode
  • The show will be distributed internationally by IMG
  • MENTAL SAMURAI | MIDSEASON 2018-19

Game play: Billed as the world’s first “mental obstacle course,” contestants battle to answer questions accurately with speed and precision. Not only does the course test their acumen in categories of knowledge, memory, numbers and sequencing, but players will also have to contend with being transported around the set at high speeds in a specially designed capsule that is capable of rotating 360 degrees.

  • Rob Lowe produces and hosts
  • Produced by Warner Horizon Unscripted & Alternative TV (Ellen’s Game of Games, The Voice) and A. Smith & Co (Hell’s Kitchen, American Ninja Warrior, The Titan Games)
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • Disney continues to beef up its new ESPN+ service, this time closing a seven-year exclusive deal with boxing promoter Top Rank. Content will air either on the linear channel or OTT service, with 54 yearly events as well as exclusive shoulder programming, classic fights, and studio content.
      • Fun fact: Most comprehensive exclusive rights deal in the history of boxing
