Ratings Report:

  • As has been typical on Summer Sundays, CBS’ BIG BROTHER took the top rating of the evening, earning a 1.5 among 18-49s, even with last week.
  • ABC’s lineup of gameshows was down slightly week to week; $100,000 PYRAMID and TO TELL THE TRUTH each lost a tenth; $100k from 0.9 to 0.8 and Truth from 0.8 to 0.7. (CELEBRITY FAMILY FEUD was a rerun).
  • The only other new programming of the night was NBC’s SHADES OF BLUE, which earned its usual 0.5 for another week.

  • FX’s SNOWFALL, following a 0.5 from its sophomore season premiere last week, rose a tenth to 0.6 with 888,000 viewers in the adults 18-49 demo.

OTHER NEWS:

  • DEVELOPMENT NEWS:
    • MGM has acquired rights to French singing series SECRET AUDITION from Groupe M6. The series has elements common to THE VOICE, except in this version, talented, unsuspecting performers, who have been reluctant to perform in public will find themselves in a room. Suddenly, the walls of the room will be removed to reveal that they are on onstage, in front of a live studio audience. The performer will then be given the chance to perform, while, unbeknownst to them, top music producers are watching their performance behind a one-way screen. If the producers believe the singer is talented enough to merit a record deal, they will reveal themselves to offer a deal.
      • Sizzle for the original version of the show can be found HERE
      • Mark Burnett will executive produce with MGM TV
      • Secret Audition premiered on July 24 in France, where it has been instantly popular, but once the gimmick is known, I wonder how they will structure subsequent seasons?
    • PROJECTS GREENLIT/ORDERED:
      • Amazon announced a slew of new series and greenlights in front of the Television Critics Association today. As expected, Amazon is continuing to step up spending for premium creators and content, although the biggest spend seems to be on a Russo Brothers event-series that they are keeping well under wraps. Notes below on new orders:
        • UNTITLED RUSSO BROTHERS EVENT SERIES

The most interesting piece of news about this greenlight is mostly that there are no details being released around the “groundbreaking global television franchise.” The brothers, best known for Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War, are working on an interesting structure for the franchise: a single “mothership” series will serve as the nexus point to create multiple original local-language and local production series around the world. Considering that Netflix decided to shutter the popular drama SENSE 8 due to budgetary concerns related to its international filming, I wonder both at Amazon’s budget for the Russo Bros project, and curious to see how the spin-off shows will look from country to country with local entities doing the heavy lifting of production.

  • UPLOAD | 10×30 | Romantic Satire

Sci-fi sitcom that takes place in the near future, where people who are near death can be “uploaded” into a virtual afterlife of their choice.

  • Creator/Showrunner/EP: Greg Daniels (Parks & Recreation, The Office)
  • THEM | 2-season straight-to-series | Horror Anthology

Season one, THEM: COVENANT, takes place in 1953 and centers around a couple who decides to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white LA neighborhood, where the seemingly idyllic setting gives way to real and supernatural threats.

  • Lena Thwaite (The Chi/Showtime, Master of None/Netflix) executive produces
  • THE EXPATRIATES | ensemble female-driven drama

Based on the novel of the same name by Janice YK Lee, the drama centers around the lives, trials, and tribulations of a group of ex-patriated women in Hong Kong.

  • Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films executive produces the project
  • First project greenlit from Kidman & Amazon’s first-look deal signed last month
  • PBS has announced three docuseries to premiere in 2019-2020, both hailing from Barak Goodman (best known for his US-centric historical docuseries American Experience) and one partnered with Ken Burns. Quick details below:
    • WOODSTOCK | Q2/3 2019

Coincides with the 50th anniversary of the historic 3-day concert that took place in upstate New York. The doc will largely focus on the audience, not the music, and probes the event as a cultural phenomenon, rather than a simple concert.

  • THE GENE: AN INTIMATE HISTORY | 3xTBD | 2020

Uses science, social history, and personal stories to weave together a historical biography of the human genome while also exploring breakthroughs in understanding the impact genes play on heredity, disease and behavior.

  • Documentarian Ken Burns and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Siddhartha Mukherjee, M.D. collaborate on the series, based on Mukherjee’s 2016 book The Gene: An Intimate History
  • Doc will also highlight key genetic discoveries throughout the history of gene research.
  • MTV International continues to expand on its docusoap slate; it’s latest series order is for the aptly titled THE ROYAL WORLD 6-episode reality series that will follow a group of international royals living together in an English countryside mansion. If you’re having REAL WORLD flashbacks right around now, I’m sure that was part of the intent behind the format of the series. Initial (owned by Endemol Shine and known for Big Brother) will produce.
  • As reported last week, Lindsay Lohan will be starring in a docuseries featuring her Lohan Beach House in Mykonos, Greece. MTV released a very low-key, low energy teaser for LOHAN BEACH HOUSE, which you can see HERE, but even for 20 seconds, I was still yawning halfway through.
  • As streaming services continue to throw money at creators and high-profile talent, Netflix announced today that they have greenlight an 8-episode limited series starring Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and executive produced by basketball star LeBron James. The show fits in right with the current trends of marrying diverse voices, female leads, and previously unknown histories. Titled MADAM CJ WALKER, the series follows the true story of Sarah Breedlove (aka Madam CJ Walker), a black hair-care pioneer who become America’s first black, self-made female millionaire. Zero Gravity and SpringHill executive produce.
  • BUSINESS BRIEFS:
    • Snapchat has partnered with NFL and NBC Sports Group (Premier League), in an effort to build out football offerings on the platform.
      • For the extended multi-year NFL deal, Snapchat will continue to distribute OUR STORIES (stories produced with material captured by fans) throughout the 2018 season
      • NBC Sports Group will produce a new original weekly titled PREMIER LEAGUE: EXTRA TIME that will be shown exclusively on the Discover page and coincide with Premier League’s 2018-19 season.
